The answer to this question is a little bit complicated, as the Vikings didn’t just wear one type of footwear. Depending on the task at hand, they would choose from a variety of different shoes and boots.
For everyday walking around, they might choose a simple shoe called a ‘turnshoe.’ This was made by stitching together a single piece of leather, folding it over, and then attaching a wooden sole. These were easy to make and repair, but not very comfortable or durable.
If they were going on a longer journey, or expected to do any fighting, they would wear boots. These were made with multiple layers of tough leather, and sometimes had metal plates sewn into them for extra protection.
On their feet, Vikings would also sometimes wear socks or leggings made from wool or animal fur. This provided extra warmth in cold weather, and helped to keep their feet dry.
